A woman has been accused of murdering a two-year-old girl she was babysitting, and the death of a one-year-old boy at her home is also being probed by police.
Jessica Cherry was charged Tuesday with second-degree murder in the death of little Kaylee Thomas, who was found unresponsive at the babysitter’s home on August 18 last year.
The toddler was taken to hospital in Virginina, USA, where she later died.
Prosecutors say she was running a daycare without a license and that cameras recorded crimes against other children a week before Kaylee died, according to WAVY news in the US.
Police are looking into the death of a one-year-old boy who was also found unresponsive in Cherry’s home last January, reports say.
Kaylee’s cause and manner of death were initially unclear, but the coroner has now classified her death as a homicide.
Cherry was arrested last September and charged with felony attempted malicious wounding, two counts of felony abuse and neglect of a child, and two counts of felony child endangerment.
After the coroner’s findings this week, Cherry was further charged with one count of second-degree murder.
After Kaylee’s death, authorities discovered a camera in the Cherry’s home.
Although the camera was turned towards a television set, prosecutors said in court they were able to see the activities of the house reflected in the dark screen.
They allege that they were able to see Cherry’s abusing multiple children.
During a hearing last week, prosecutors played the video for the court, according to MyFox8, in the US.
Prosecutors allege that the video depicts Cherry covering an infant’s nose and mouth tightly with a cloth and then leaving him alone in a room.
Another scene allegedly captures her slapping an infant, causing the child to cry out in pain.
Cherry is being held without bond and has pleaded not guilty to the charges against her.
